With High Summer nearly upon us, it's time to get out and relax in the garden. Amateur Gardening tested several games stocked by Heritage Gardens. It is worth highlighting these again as they never go out of fashion.

How much room and type of space you have will determine choice. The most versatile games from this point of view are chess and quoits, which can be played in a space of up to 10ft (3m) and on hard paving as well as a lawn.

Our mid range Cottage Croquet Set made by the leading producer of garden games in the UK, Garden Games Ltd,was rated 18/20 by Amateur Gardening, and costs just £95 including delivery. Julia Heaton noted how the mallets are ideal for all types of players and also how "the equipment performed really well and was a firm favourite for all croquet beginners".

Kubb was rated 15/20, and costs just £44.99. This is an unusual, lesser known game that involves throwing the six 12in (30cm) battens to know down opponents wooden blocks. The aim is to down the king first. It comes with a tough-looking zip-up bag with a strong carrying handle. Amateur Gardening noted how this is "a sturdily made game with smoothly planed, knot-free pine parts".

Finally, our outdoor chess set was also featured in the magazine and costs just £43.95. The chequer mat can be rolled up or folded for storage. This game can be played on a patio or lawn.
