Lobularia maritima 'Royal Carpet' is a robust Hardy Annual (H3). While many purple cultivars fade in intense sunlight, 'Royal Carpet' has been specifically bred for pigment stability, maintaining its deep violet hue even during the height of a British summer. Biologically, it is a maritime specialist, meaning it is naturally adapted to thrive in coastal conditions, salt spray, and poor, gritty soils.

The "Honey" Biology: The intoxicating fragrance of Alyssum is a result of high concentrations of volatile aromatic compounds designed to attract a wide spectrum of pollinators. Unlike many modern bedding plants bred solely for visual impact, this heirloom-style variety prioritises the production of nectar and perfume, making it a high-value species for garden biodiversity.

Organic Pest Control: In organic horticulture, Alyssum is widely used as an "insectary plant." It is specifically attractive to hoverflies (Syrphidae), whose larvae are voracious predators of aphids. How to Sow:
Direct sow outdoors from March to May exactly where they are to flower—this is the preferred method as Alyssum dislikes root disturbance. Alternatively, sow in September for early spring blooms. Surface sow the seeds onto moist soil and do not cover them; Alyssum seeds are photoblastic and require light to trigger germination. Simply press them gently into the surface. Germination typically occurs within 7-14 days.

Where to Plant:
They demand full sun to reach their peak colour saturation and thrive in poor, well-drained soil. Avoid overly fertile ground, as high nitrogen levels will encourage lush green foliage at the expense of the honey-scented blooms. Space or thin plants to 15cm apart to allow for their spreading, carpet-like architecture.

The "Mid-Summer Haircut":
To maintain a non-stop display, perform a professional rejuvenation in mid-summer. If the plants start looking straggly or stop flowering, simply shear the entire plant back by half. Water well afterwards, and within 2-3 weeks, they will produce a fresh mound of foliage and a second wave of intense purple flowers that will last until the first frosts.
