We've always believed that great gardening starts with great advice. Today, we're bringing that belief into a new era β€” introducing the Heritage Gardens AI Plant & Product Advisor.

Whether you're a seasoned horticulturist or just starting to cultivate your first patch of border planting, finding the right guidance at the right moment can make all the difference between a garden that thrives and one that simply survives. That's why we've spent months developing something we believe is genuinely new to UK garden retail.

Launching today, our AI Plant & Product Advisor is a custom-built service that sits at the heart of the Heritage Gardens website β€” combining the conversational knowledge of advanced AI with direct access to our curated product range. It's intelligent, it's personal, and it's always on.

Intelligence meets experience

There are plenty of generic garden chatbots out there, and even more gardening forums filled with well-meaning but occasionally contradictory advice. What we've built is neither. Our AI Advisor is powered by Claude β€” one of the most capable AI systems available β€” and has been trained to understand the nuances of British gardening: our seasons, our soils, our unpredictable weather, and our deeply personal relationship with our outdoor spaces.

But knowledge alone isn't enough. What makes our Advisor genuinely useful is that it's connected to our product catalogue. When it recommends a slow-release fertiliser for your roses, it can show you exactly which products we stock, explain why each one suits your situation, and help you make a considered choice β€” not just a purchase.

🌿

Plant Diagnosis & Care

Describe what you're seeing β€” yellowing leaves, stunted growth, pest damage β€” and get clear, actionable guidance on how to help your plants recover.

πŸͺ΄

Planting Plans

Tell us about your space, soil type, and sun exposure. The Advisor will suggest companion planting combinations and seasonal sequences that actually work together.

πŸ›’

Curated Product Matching

Every recommendation comes with matched products from our range β€” with context on why they've been suggested for your specific needs.

πŸ“…

Seasonal Timing

Know exactly when to sow, prune, divide, and feed β€” with reminders calibrated to the UK growing calendar rather than a generic global schedule.

A conversation, not a search box

Unlike a traditional product filter or a keyword search, the AI Advisor lets you explain your situation in plain language and get a response that takes your whole context into account. Here's an example of the kind of exchange you can have:

Example conversation
πŸ‘€
I've got a north-facing border that's quite damp. My neighbour has hostas there and they look beautiful, but I want something a bit more varied β€” maybe some height and seasonal interest. What would you suggest?
🌿
A north-facing damp border is actually a lovely opportunity β€” often underestimated! Your neighbour's hostas are a great anchor. To add height and movement, I'd pair them with Astilbe 'Fanal' (deep crimson plumes in midsummer) and Ligularia 'The Rocket' for dramatic late-summer spikes up to 150cm. For spring interest, add Pulmonaria 'Blue Ensign' along the front edge β€” it flowers before most other plants wake up and the spotted foliage looks good all season.

πŸ‘€
The Ligularia sounds perfect β€” does it need any special care?
🌿
Ligularia thrives in exactly the conditions you have β€” it actually wilts in full sun, so north-facing suits it well. Keep the soil consistently moist (it won't tolerate drying out) and mulch in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds. It's fully hardy, so once established it needs very little attention. Divide every three to four years to keep it vigorous.

That's the difference. Not a list of products vaguely tagged "shade-tolerant," but a genuine conversation that builds on what you've said and gives you advice you can act on with confidence.

We wanted to give every customer the kind of advice you'd get from a knowledgeable friend who also happened to know our entire product range off by heart.
The Heritage Gardens Team

Why this matters for British gardeners

Garden retail in the UK has always been about more than transactions. The best garden centres have always offered something that supermarkets and big-box DIY stores couldn't: real expertise. The kind that tells you a plant labelled "sun or shade" probably won't be happy in full north-facing shadow, or that the RHS planting guide's advice was written for the South East and your Pennine garden operates by different rules.

We believe we're among the first online garden retailers in the UK to offer this kind of genuinely integrated AI advisory service β€” one that bridges expert knowledge and a trusted product selection in a single, seamless conversation. That's not a small thing. It represents a new way of thinking about what an e-commerce garden site can be.

How to use it

The AI Adviser appears as a conversation window on every page of the Heritage Gardens website. You don't need an account to use it β€” just start typing. It works on mobile and desktop, and you can pick up a conversation mid-browse, asking about a specific product you're looking at or moving from a general planting question to a specific purchase.

It's honest about its limits. If something is genuinely uncertain β€” a rare pest, an unusual soil type, a combination it hasn't encountered β€” it will say so, and point you towards further resources rather than guessing.

It won't oversell. The Adviser is designed to give you the best advice for your garden. Sometimes that means recommending a product combination; sometimes it means telling you what you already have is sufficient.

It improves over time. We'll continue to develop and refine the service based on the questions you ask and the feedback you give. The more you use it, the better it will become at serving the specific needs of Heritage Gardens customers.

This is just the beginning

In the coming months we'll be expanding the Advisor's capabilities β€” including personalised growing calendars based on your location, the ability to photograph a plant problem and get an instant diagnosis, and deeper integration with our new wishlist and project planner features.

We're genuinely excited about where this is going. Not because AI is fashionable, but because we've seen what it can do for gardeners who ask it the right questions. It turns out that when you combine decades of accumulated gardening knowledge with a tool that never tires of answering questions, good things happen.

Your garden deserves it.
