June Roses
June is the finest month in the rose garden — and with the right varieties and a little knowledge, the season can be nothing short of magical.
June is the best month for roses and there are few more appealing vistas than an archway covered with sweet-smelling roses in full bloom.
There is something quietly irreplaceable about a rose garden in June. The combination of fragrance, colour, and the particular quality of early summer light makes it the garden month that most people remember. 2026 looks set to be a vintage year — the mild spring has built strong root systems and set the scene for exceptional flowering from midsummer onwards.
Roses like to grow in a sunny position with well-drained soil, sheltered from strong winds. When planting, dig a wide and deep hole so that the roots are not cramped, and ensure that plenty of compost and potash is added to give your rose a strong start. They can be bought potted or bare-rooted depending on the season.
🌹 Essential Planting Guidance
- Plant in a sunny, sheltered position — roses dislike exposed or waterlogged ground.
- Dig a wide, deep hole so roots can spread freely without compaction.
- Add generous compost and potash at planting — a strong start means years of reward.
- Water well in dry spells for the first season; established roses are more self-sufficient.
- Available potted or bare-rooted — potted roses can be planted throughout the season.
Climbing Roses
Climbing roses and arches — a perfect combination
Climbing roses reach a minimum height of 2m with repeat flowering throughout the summer. They are ideal for growing up arches, arbours, and pergolas — and when the scent drifts across the garden on a warm June evening, very little else compares.
The Rustic Arch pictured here is a well-proportioned, low-cost garden structure that can be assembled simply. With climbing roses planted either side, it creates a breathtaking garden entrance from the second season onwards — and only improves with age. Available from £149.
There is an abundance of choice in our Heritage Rose Collection, grown by our specialist partner nursery renowned for their quality. Many roses seen in garden centres and DIY stores may be cheaper, but they frequently disappoint when established — or fail to perform over time. With some things in life it is worth paying a slight premium, and roses certainly fall into that category.
Choosing Your Rose
Three characteristics that matter most
When selecting a rose, three qualities should guide your choice above all others:
Visual Appeal
Colour, form, and the habit of the plant in your specific setting — consider backdrop, neighbouring plants, and seasonal succession.
Ease of Growing
Disease resistance and vigour vary greatly between varieties. Heritage collection roses are selected for reliability as well as beauty.
Fragrance
Scent is what sets the rose apart from almost every other garden plant. A fragrant rose transforms a garden into an experience.
With some things in life it is worth paying a slight premium — and roses certainly fall into that category. Cheap garden centre roses can often disappoint. Our Heritage Collection is grown by a specialist nursery renowned for quality that lasts.
